What is the z-Start External Adjuster?
The Patent Pending z-Start External Adjuster allows you to quickly make changes to how your z-Start operates without the need to open you engine case. With the z-Start External Adjuster, you can adjust the engine speed at which the clutch begins to engage (stall speed) and how much clutch "slip" the z-Start provides before becoming fully engaged (engagement rate); all with the twist of an adjuster.
Why do I need an External Adjuster?
An External Adjuster allows you to quickly tune the z-Start to your riding style and riding conditions in just seconds. To get the most out of your automatic clutch, fine tuning of the stall speed and engagement rate is critical. The optimal automatic clutch engagement is very different for a casual trail rider and a pro motocrosser. Other automatic clutches require you to open up your engine and disassemble the clutch to make adjustments; making your engine vulnerable to dust, dirt, debris and taking away valuable riding time. With the z-Start External Adjuster, anyone can tune their z-Start clutch in just seconds; track-side or trail-side.
Can I still use my stock clutch lever to override the z-Start engagement?
Yes, The new z-Start External Adjuster works in place with your stock clutch cable. Rekluse Motorsports has developed an External Clutch Perch Adjuster The external adjuster is avalible for an additional $99 direct through Rekluse. The Clutch External Perch Adjuster allows you to retain full use of your clutch lever and adjust the z-Start Clutch from the handle bars.
I'm new to dirt bike riding. How can the z-Start help me?
Riding with the z-Start removes one of the biggest frustrations new riders face isclutch control and stalling. Working the clutch smoothly, especially at lower speeds or on hills is challenging for experienced riders. The z-Start does a better job manipulating clutch slip than you can.
I'm a pro-level motocross & supermoto racer. How can the z-Start help me?
With proper tuning of the z-Start Clutch for track conditions, most riders will be consistently faster off the starting line with a "roll-on" start than by "feathering" the clutch off the line. The z-Start allows the rider to forget about the clutch lever for most racing situations and focus on the track in front of the rider. Without the need to reach for the clutch lever during braking, over jumps and out of corners, fatigue is greatly reduced and control is improved. The rekluse clutch can also be adjusted to act as a slipper clutch. Corner exit speed is typically better because the z-Start "feathers" the clutch perfectly every time. The z-Start is virtually stall proof and even after a crash, most bikes can be picked up and ridden away quickly without fear of stalling.
I race cross-country events. How can the z-Start help me?
In technical trail sections, the z-Start really shines. Forget about the using the clutch lever to negotiate slow, technical sections and focus completely on the trail in front of you without fear of stalling and precise control of speed and power to the ground. For technical hill climbing, the z-Start allows you to back off the throttle to negotiate obstacles and then reaccelerate without fear of stalling the engine or "looping-out". Most riders can attack corners more aggressively by brake sliding into the corner and then accelerating without the need for delicate clutch work or a gear shift; reducing physical and mental fatigue on the rider. The z-Start is virtually stall proof and even after a crash, most bikes can be picked up and ridden away quickly without fear of stalling.
I'm an experienced trail rider. How can the z-Start help me?
Riding with the z-Start makes every ride more enjoyable. Without the need to manipulate the clutch lever, the rider has less fatigue and the bike is considerably more forgiving in almost all situations. With the z-Start Clutch fear of a technical section of trail or a hill climb often disappears. The z-Start clutch adds trials-bike like control to motocross bikes and trail bikes alike; allowing the rider to take a whole new approach to sections of trail most riders merely struggle through.
What is the z-Start made from?
The z-Start is made from the highest quality billet 6061-T6 aluminum and billet 4140 steel, precision CNC machined to tolerances of .001" (that's one thousandth of an inch).
> What kind of warranty does the z-Start come with?
The z-Start is backed by a 1 year warranty from defects in material or workmanship. The z-Start also includes a 30-day money back guarantee. If for any reason you are unhappy with how the z-Start performs in the first 30 days of use, simply contact Rekluse Motorsports for a return authorization and we will refund your purchase. If you purchased your z-Start from a dealer, have your dealer contact Rekluse Motorsports for return authorization.
Will the z-Start wear my clutch plates faster?
That depends on how you use or abuse the z-Start. With the z-Start Clutch, you will find that you are able to ride smoothly in one or even two gears higher than you normally ride. However, riding uphill, in 4th gear at 10mph for extended period of times will cause significant clutch slipping, accelerate clutch plate wear and possible damage to your engine. When riding with any automatic clutch, it is important to select the right gear for the situation. In general it is safe to ride one gear higher than the riding conditions dictate for short periods of time.
That being said, when used properly the z-Start should allow for clutch plate life equal to or better than a manual clutch.
What kind of maintenance does the z-Start require?
For optimal performance, it is important that the z-Start be mounted within a certain distance of the clutch plates. Rekluse Motorsports recommends that very aggressive riders check the mounting distance after the first 25 hours of use and thereafter every 50 hours or after any racing event that causes excessive heating of the clutch. For typical riders, we recommend the first mounting distance check at 50 hours and thereafter at 100 hours of use. Additionally, Rekluse Motorsports recommends that the entire z-Start assembly be disassembled for inspection at 100 hours of use for very aggressive riders and 200 hours of use for typical riders.
How much weight does the z-Start add to my bike?
Less than 6 ounces of rotating mass in the clutch. Keep in mind that the clutch spins at approximately 1/3 engine speed so flywheel effect of the z-Start is minimal. If you also remove your clutch cable and clutch lever, total weight gain is negligible.
When will the z-Start be available for my bike?
Soon! We are working very hard to make the z-Start available for all popular dirt bikes. By filling out the form on the Contact page and checking the bikes you are interested in, Rekluse Motorsports will automatically send you an e-mail message when we have a new product available for that bike.
